SHOP SALES ATTENDANT
Job Title: Shop Sales Attendant
Location: Maralal, Samburu County
Industry: Retail – Household & General Merchandise
Reports To: Shop Manager / Business Owner
Job Purpose
The Shop Sales Attendant will be responsible for providing excellent customer service, promoting and selling products, maintaining attractive product displays, handling stock responsibly, and supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the shop.
The ideal candidate should be honest, energetic, customer-focused and proactive in selling, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sales & Customer Service
- Welcome customers warmly and assist them in identifying suitable products.
- Explain product features, prices and available options to customers.
- Actively promote products and recommend additional or alternative items to increase sales.
- Respond to customer questions professionally and courteously.
- Build good relationships with regular customers and encourage repeat business.
- Work towards achieving daily and monthly sales targets.
2. Cash & Payment Handling
- Receive cash, M-Pesa and other approved forms of payment.
- Issue receipts and ensure all sales are accurately recorded.
- Maintain accountability for money received during the shift.
- Support daily sales reconciliation and promptly report any discrepancies.
- Follow the shop's procedures regarding discounts, returns and exchanges.
3. Stock Management
- Receive, count and verify incoming stock.
- Arrange and display merchandise neatly and attractively.
- Ensure products are correctly priced and labelled.
- Monitor stock levels and inform the supervisor when products are running low.
- Participate in regular stock counts.
- Help prevent stock losses, theft, damage and unnecessary wastage.
- Immediately report any stock discrepancies or damaged goods.
4. Shop Presentation & Housekeeping
- Keep shelves, counters, displays and the general shop area clean and organised.
- Ensure merchandise is arranged in a way that makes it easy for customers to find products.
- Regularly replenish shelves from available stock.
- Maintain an attractive and welcoming shop environment.
5. General Shop Operations
- Open and/or close the shop as assigned.
- Follow all shop operating procedures.
- Safeguard company property, stock and equipment.
- Report customer feedback, complaints and operational issues to the supervisor.
- Perform any other reasonable duties related to the effective operation of the shop.
Qualifications & Experience
- KCSE certificate or equivalent.
- Previous experience in retail sales, shop attendant, cashier, supermarket, Mali kwa Mali, household goods or general merchandise sales will be an added advantage.
- Basic numerical and cash-handling skills.
- Ability to use M-Pesa and basic sales/POS systems where applicable.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in Kiswahili; knowledge of English and/or local languages spoken within Maralal/Samburu would be an added advantage.
